They are quiet, quick to respond and often cheaper to run than petrol or diesel vehicles, but they also ask for a slightly different set of habits.


The basics are easy to learn. Start the vehicle correctly, charge it safely, look after the battery, keep up with inspections and understand the rules that apply where it is used. This guide covers the practical side of electric mobility, with a focus on safe operation, sensible maintenance and legal requirements in an Australian context.

Range can drop when carrying heavy loads, towing, driving at highway speeds, climbing hills or using heating and cooling. Build in a buffer rather than arriving at a charger with very low charge. A relaxed plan is safer than relying on the final few kilometres.

Maintenance Guide


Electric vehicles have fewer moving parts than petrol or diesel vehicles, but they are not maintenance-free. Battery health, tyres, brakes, cooling systems, software and safety checks still matter.


A well-maintained EV is safer, more efficient and more pleasant to drive.


Care for the main battery


The high-voltage battery is the most valuable part of many electric vehicles. It is managed by onboard software, but driving and charging habits can affect long-term health.


Use these habits where practical:


  • Keep the battery away from very low charge for long periods.

  • Avoid leaving the vehicle at 100 per cent charge for days unless the manual recommends it.

  • Use fast charging when needed, but rely on slower charging for routine use when possible.

  • Park in shade during extreme heat if there is a choice.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s storage advice if the vehicle will sit unused.


Most EVs have a thermal management system that helps regulate battery temperature. If the vehicle warns about battery temperature, charging faults or reduced power, do not ignore it.


Do not forget the 12-volt battery


Many electric cars still use a small 12-volt battery to run locks, lights, computers and safety systems. If it fails, the car may not start even when the main battery has plenty of charge.


Have the 12-volt battery checked during scheduled servicing, especially as the vehicle ages. Warning signs can include slow wake-up, error messages or trouble unlocking the vehicle.


Check tyres more often


Electric vehicles can be heavier than similar petrol vehicles because of the battery pack. They also produce strong low-speed torque. Both can increase tyre wear if pressures are low or driving is aggressive.


Check tyre pressure at least monthly and before long trips. Use the pressure listed on the vehicle placard, not the maximum pressure printed on the tyre. Watch for uneven wear, vibration or pulling to one side, as these can point to alignment or suspension issues.

Service brakes, even if they are used less


Regenerative braking reduces wear on brake pads and rotors, but the friction brakes still need inspection. In fact, light use can create its own issues, such as surface corrosion or sticky components.

  • Brake pad and rotor condition.

  • Brake fluid condition.

  • Parking brake operation.

  • Warning lights or unusual pedal feel.


Use the friction brakes firmly from time to time when safe to do so. This can help keep brake surfaces clean, but it does not replace servicing.


Keep cooling systems and software current


EVs often use coolant to manage battery, motor and power electronics temperature. These systems may have long service intervals, but they still need the correct coolant and professional checks.


Software updates can improve charging behaviour, efficiency, safety features and diagnostics. Some updates happen over the air, while others require a service visit. Read update notes where available and complete safety-related updates promptly.


Follow the service schedule


Manufacturer service schedules still matter. They may include cabin filters, suspension checks, steering checks, wiper blades, lights, charging port inspection and diagnostic scans.


Keep a service record. It helps with warranty claims, resale value and early fault detection.
